What is Holdover in Timing Systems?

Holdover is a timing system's ability to keep accurate time on its own after it loses its external reference signal — most commonly GPS. Rather than the system's clock drifting wildly or failing the moment GPS drops out, a well-designed holdover strategy keeps it close enough to correct for minutes, hours, or even days.

Why holdover matters

GPS and other satellite timing signals aren't always available. Signals can be blocked indoors, jammed, spoofed, or interrupted by atmospheric conditions or equipment faults. For systems where timing accuracy is critical — telecom networks, financial trading systems, power grid synchronisation, broadcast infrastructure — even a brief, unmanaged loss of reference can cause serious problems.

How holdover works

While the external reference is available, the system continuously "disciplines" its internal oscillator, learning its behaviour and correcting for any small drift. When the reference is lost, the system switches to holdover mode: it relies entirely on the internal oscillator, using what it learned to predict and compensate for drift as accurately as possible.

What determines holdover performance?

The quality of the internal oscillator is the single biggest factor. A basic crystal oscillator might drift unacceptably within seconds. An OCXO, with its superior short and medium-term stability, can typically hold accurate timing for hours. A rubidium oscillator can extend that to days.

Typical applications requiring strong holdover

  • Telecom network synchronisation
  • GPS-disciplined oscillators (GPSDOs) for critical infrastructure
  • Financial transaction timestamping
  • Broadcast and studio timing systems
  • Power grid phasor measurement units
